Ministries

ACCESS PLUS – RAMP BUILDING

This group of men, women and youth volunteer one Saturday per month to build ramps for people  using wheelchairs who need safe access into their homes.  No experience is necessary to volunteer for the build team, and if you don’t want to build ministry opportunities abound with the ramp recipient/family, and the neighbors.

ACOLYTES

This group of youth 5th grade through 12th grade, lead in the worship service processions, and assist the priest with preparations for the Holy Eucharist during Sunday worship services.  Youth receive training 1-2 times per year to perform the specific duties of Banner Bearer, Junior Acolyte and Senior Acolyte.

ALTAR GUILD

This group of women, men and youth prepare the sanctuary for worship services and special occasions on a weekly and seasonal basis.  They bake the bread, clean the linens, add oil to the candles, wash the vessels, and decorate to enhance the worship experience.  Volunteers receive on the job training and a reference manual is available.

HOLY LOCUSTS – CHURCH LAWN MAINTENANCE

This group of men, women and youth mow/trim/edge the lawns, and clear the church courtyard/sidewalks/entryways of debris on a weekly basis.  Volunteers work in teams of two using a riding mower and hand-held equipment.  Volunteers are trained on site.

MONDAY BOOK STUDY

This group of senior citizens participates in reading and discussing various books, and meet weekly in the Church Library.

LAY EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS

This group of adult men and women serve in the worship services to participate in the processions, read the Bible lessons, lead the Prayers of the People, assist the Priest with serving the Holy Eucharist, and lead Morning Prayer service at the Nursing Home.  Volunteers are trained and licensed by the Priest and the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas.

MAINTENANCE/REPAIR VOLUNTEER(S)

This group assists the Vestry’s Junior Warden to fulfill the task of maintaining the Church buildings and grounds. Experience in construction, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, reading diagrams, and general knowledge of equipment is recommended.

OUTREACH COMMITTEE

This group of volunteers is committed to involving St. Mark’s  to provide food for the hungry, shelter for the homeless, and meet other emerging human needs through hands-on service, witnessing to the Gospel, and managing monetary contributions to charitable agencies.  Committee meetings are held quarterly. New committee members are always welcome.

VESTRY

The Vestry of St Mark’s is the Board/Council responsible for the business of the church. They help the Rector in the administration of staff and the physical property of the Church. The Vestry sets guidelines and policy for the day to day implementation of St. Mark’s mission in Corpus Christi.  Vestry Person of the Day is responsible for opening/closing the Church buildings for worship services and events, speaking a word of welcome at worship services, and managing safety/urgent issues during activities.  Vestry members are elected annually for 3-year terms of service by the parish and receive training in February each year.  Meetings are held monthly with officers elected annually within the group for Junior Warden, Treasurer, and Secretary.  Senior Warden is appointed by the Rector.

THRIVE -YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY

The young adult ministry at St. Marks welcomes persons in college all the way to married with no children. This group strives to find a place for people who feel “in between” to join together in Bible study, social events, and fellowship.  The group meets bi-weekly.

GREETERS

This group of men, women and youth volunteer to warmly greet worshipers, open doors, and offer assistance/direction to meet the needs of the guests/worshipers.  Greeters serve monthly for worship services.

USHERS

This group of men, women and youth serve to distribute bulletins, open doors, provide directions for needs that may arise, count the worship participants, assist with collecting and counting the offerings, and direct people in an orderly manner for communion.  They assist the Vestry Person of the Day with safety and urgent concerns.  Training typically occurs in the Fall annually.  Ushers serve in worship services typically 2 times each month.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

This group of men, women, and youth volunteers work with the paid Director of Children’s Ministry to nurture, grow, and disciple the children (newborn through 5th grade) and their families to become strong disciples of Jesus Christ.  Volunteers prepare/organize/teach lessons during Kidz Church and Kids in Christ to children 3 years through 5thgrade, assist the Nursery worker with the newborns-2 year-olds, and participate in special events for the children.  Volunteers are required to complete a Safeguarding God’s Children training.

HOSPITALITY MINISTRIES

This ministry offers refreshments/lite lunch after worship services, assists with food preparation/presentation/clean-up at special events, and keeps the kitchen clean/orderly/ready to serve the needs of the parish and guests.  Volunteers are trained in proper management of the kitchen/machinery, and the organization of materials.  A Food Handler’s Card is required.

ELDERS

The Elders are a small group of spiritually mature Christians, chosen/invited by Fr. John, to share some of the responsibility of nurturing the spiritual wellbeing and development of St. Mark’s.  The group meets regularly with Fr. John for discussion/prayer/discernment for St. Mark’s spiritual development.  Elders assist to lead worship services, teach Bible studies, and provide pastoral ministry.

FRUIT OF THE VINE BOOK CLUB

This group meets monthly to discuss current and classic Christian literature, at designated venues.

OLD GUYS LUNCH GROUP

This group of mostly retired older men gathers socially for fellowship every other Wednesday at a designated restaurant, with an opportunity to share life’s ups and downs.

THURSDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY AND PRAYER GROUP

This group of adults meets at 7pm for Bible study for 1 hour, followed by a contemplative prayer time and sharing of insights/revelations.

PRAYER MINISTRY

Volunteers serve in teams of two during Communion and Morning Prayer altar calls to pray with parishioners.  This ministry also includes a Prayer Chain with committed volunteers receiving information by email regarding specific prayer needs, which they lift in earnest prayer.

WRAPPED IN PRAYER

This group of volunteers make lap blankets for wheelchair ramp recipients, and those with pastoral needs. The group crochets beautiful borders on fleece material, and they pray for the recipient as they crochet.  The group meets monthly, but the ministry can be worked on individually.

YOUTH MINISTRY

This group of adult volunteers work to assist the Youth Minister to teach, grow, challenge, empower and lead the youth 6th through 12th grades in their spiritual journey with Jesus Christ to develop a solid Christian foundation. Volunteers assist with activities, transportation, chaperoning events, and provide mentoring/pastoral support. Volunteers are required to obtain Safeguarding God’s Children training.

WEBSITE MANAGEMENT

This small group of volunteers builds and updates the Church website with information/events/spiritual formation and links to appropriate sites.

PRESENTATION MANAGER

This group of youth and adult volunteers are responsible for entering media, and facilitating the presentation of the worship services media using the computer, sound board, lights and other technical equipment.

CHOIR

The choir is under the direction of Dr. David Sutanto.  Dr. Sutanto is also an Associate Professor of Music at Del Mar College.

Kairos Prison Ministry

The mission of the Kairos Prison Ministry is to share the transforming love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ to impact the hearts and lives of incarcerated men, women and youth, as well as their families, to become loving and productive citizens of their communities.

Safeguarding God’s Children

If you are someone who works or volunteers with children or youth at the church, you must attend Safeguarding God’s Children. 

This is a FREE 3 hour class to help protect our children by broadening child abuse awareness and prevention.

First time Sunday School Teachers, Staff Members, Youth Volunteers, Children Volunteers must take a classroom training before working or volunteering with the children or youth.  Afterwards an online course is available to renew your certification every 5 years.  Further instructions for online course can be given upon request.

​For Camp Counselors certification is every year.

​Parishioners, parents, or high school students are encouraged to participate if they are interested.  ​Please contact the church office at stmarkscc@stmarkscc.org for more information.
